Interior Focus // Ralph Lauren’s NY home

It’s not like any of us would expect Ralph Lauren’s home to be anything but fabulous, but in case you needed proof…

I tend to cycle in tastes a bit – and in a strange way I think I subconsciously move away from that which is popularly in fashion at any one time. I think this has to do with looking for unique and original ideas – and doesn’t it tend to be the case that the world [and perhaps the media in particular] has a habit of grabbing hold of good, forward thinking ideas and exploiting them to the nth degree – so that what was probably at first a fantastically new and original idea at it’s outset soon becomes the subject of incessant imitation. This then leads to the idea becoming overdone (and often in the form of rather poor imitation) to the point of the world becoming entirely drowned in it, until moving on to the next big thing…

Having said that, there’s a longevity and durability in very good design that tends to by-pass these constantly undulating trends. Often this level of design skips around the edges of what is popular – perhaps influencing a tasteful or creative designer or producer here and there – but for the most part standing its ground on the perimeter of the mainstream.

With all of that said, I know that you know Ralph Lauren; we all do. Yet despite his influence I certainly haven’t lived through an era suffocated by false representations of his style. Somehow his work has maintained enormous influence and respect within the design world without ever being dragged through the muddy world of popularity. I would hazard that craftsmanship has a lot to do with this – in that his pieces are always of the highest quality, meaning that copies or weak imitations are inherently too costly and complicated for the world of over commericalised interiors to bother with. Often that which comes to be produced en masse must be inherently simpler and easier to replicate than style such as that of RL.

Well, thank goodness! Classic taste never goes out of style – and in my view this is in many ways because it never really was in style. Ralph Lauren’s beautiful home in New York state is a wonderful example of this – the photographs below are a combination of a recent shoot and one taken over a decade ago in 2004 – with very few updates to the interiors.
